Lewis Khan: Theatre Second Edition
Lewis Khan: Theatre Second Edition
Due to continued demand after selling out the first edition in one week we are excited to release a second, soft back edition of Lewis Khan’s Theatre.
In 2014 Khan won a bursary to make imagery for an exhibition at The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London, after which the Hospital Trust asked him to pitch for a new project. Initially his idea revolved around the politics of anti-privatization, a narrative that is still important to him. Gradually though, his approach became less overtly political and more transparently human, dealing with the strength and fragility that he witnessed on a daily basis.
He spent prolonged periods time assimilating to the environment. Shadowing Mark Bower, a consultant oncologist, he became aware of the emotional effects of hospital life that apply just as much to staff as patients. This observation suggested that the hierarchy that we might assume of hospital life is a fallacy. The reality is more like a mutual respect that eschews power dynamics in favour of a communal understanding.
From Strength and Fragility, by Jim Campbell.

Due to the restrictions from the current lockdown we are unable to launch in the traditional format our latest title Theatre by Lewis Khan, an incredibly apt photobook that celebrates the work of the incredible doctors, nurses and support staff of the Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospitals in London.
Lewis has worked on the project for over four years so instead of shelving the project until the autumn we have decided to offer the opportunity to pre-order the books for delivery later in the year once things have returned to some semblance of normality. The first edition series of 100 hand made books all sold in one week. Due to this demand we are delighted to offer another opportunity to own this book although the second edition will be produced as a more cost effective PUR bound book with a soft back cover.
For each book that is pre-ordered all profits will be donated to NHS Charities Together. We feel there is no more deserving cause in these difficult times and is a small thank you from Lewis to the extraordinary people who work in our hospitals.
