‘Twelfth Labour’ is a personal exploration of complex and coercive relationships told through the lens of greyhound racing. By finding parallels between the dynamics of hounds and their handlers, spectators and bookmakers, the process of making this work is as much a reflection on my own experiences as it is of the dogs. Through multiple visits to Romford Dog Track, I have curated a series of images that delve into the fading world of greyhound racing. This collection celebrates the freedom of the run while acknowledging the controversies embedded within the industry, drawing parallels between betting culture and coercion. After being diagnosed with PTSD following an abusive relationship, I have used photography to process the complex emotions that come with this diagnosis, image making becoming a therapeutic tool to help redefine myself and process previous trauma. Whilst not a direct comment on the greyhound industry, I have found common threads that weave between the two stories – offering space to find new contexts within the complex layers.‘Twelfth Labour’ does not look to offer answers, but to question and provoke conversations through metaphor and common themes. The track itself becomes a metaphor for the cycle of abuse, where each circuit mirrors the repetitive and unpredictable nature of torment, while the public view of racing presents a façade that obscures the complete truth.
